Gaming and simulation conference Otronicon returned to the Orlando Science Center for its fifth year with four days of video games, simulators, art galleries, workshops, and more. The event, presented by Full Sail University, offers a series of exhibits and demonstrations that display how interactive technology is changing the way that we live, learn, and play.
There were several new additions to Otronicon this year. The festivities kicked off opening night with the Video Game Costume Competition, as contestants dressed to impressed in their best game-centric gear. The worlds of rock and roll and games collided with one another at Saturday’s Cocktails & Cosmos event, which featured live music, fashion shows, and a Rock Band Karaoke Showdown.
Florida Hospital was also on-hand with a series of demonstrations showing how technology has helped break new ground in surgery. Guests were able to operate the da Vinci Robot, which used remotely operated robotic arms with minute surgical instruments to complete minimally invasive surgical maneuvers.
Of course, all of the classic Otronicon elements were also there. The Artronica exhibition highlighted game-inspired art by local artists and Full Sail students, while the Classic Arcade Lounge paid tribute to over two-dozen titles from the 80s and 90s, including Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong. Full Sail also hosted its series of educational workshops showing how the audio, artwork, and digital graphics from games are created.
